Scope & Content |
The letter dated January 22, 1863 and written to Colonel H. B. Davidson, provides insight into the Confederate perspective of the infamous "Mud March." In this letter, Lee orders Davidson to move against Major General Ambrose E. Burnside, commander of the Army of the Potomac. Burnside, hoping to bolster Union fortunes after the devastating loss at Fredericksburg a month earlier, had planned to cross the Rappahanock River in an offensive move against Lee's army; however, bad weather and disorganization doomed the operation to failure and Burnside's offensive was forever known as the "Mud March." |
