Two letters document the Civil War military career of William H. Heath. In the first letter (July 6, 1863; 2 ½ pages), Heath writes about a heavy skirmish with the Confederate forces near Helena, Arkansas, and describes how the Union forces captured a Rebel battle flag: "At this moment Capt. John G. Hudson, who commanded Battery D., mounted upon the ridge above them and demanded their surrender. Lt. Col Johnson, commanding Bell's regiment asked 'by what authority?' 'By authority of my twelve pound howitzer' ans'd the Capt." The second letter (July 21, 1864; 5 ½ pages) is a battle report for the Battle of Tupelo. |
