In this 4 page letter dated January 13, 1864, Steven A. Stebbins of the 7th Connecticut Infantry writes to his nephew Edmond Ransom of the 21st Connecticut. A musician, Stebbins reports receiving his instruments on New Year's Day and describes the hours that the band spends at practice. He tells Ransom of Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners served including details of the menu and cost. Finally, Stebbins reports on the transition from the Enfield rifles to Spencer carbines. "Since I wrote you, our Regt. has changed the Enfield Rifle, for the Spencer carbine, 7 shooters. They are a splendid tool for killing folks." |
