This July 28, 1863 letter by Lester S. Richards consists primarily of a copy of a letter recently received by Austin Spoor, a member of Richard's regiment of 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery. The letter which Richards transcribed was written by Spoor's brother, William B. Spoor, a Vermont native who elected to serve with the Confederacy. At the time of William's letter, July 19, 1863, he was a prisoner of war at Fort Delaware. In the letter to his brother, William states that he was not impressed into Confederate service, but rather, served willingly and remains loyal to the Confederacy. |
