Union soldier's letter, written in ink by Pvt. Charles L. Hewitt, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., St. Helena Island, [S. C.], Nov. 22, 1863, reading, in part: "...You said that you thought that Sumter was a pile of rubbish, you would think so if you should see it now, but it is not so big a pile but what the rebs hold it, and we cannot take it without loosing a good many lives and Gen. Gilmore don't believe in that when it can be helped, and so he is banging away at it for there is a good many holes where they can stay, yet there is no danger of our getting stuck in the mud down this way...The camp rumors say that we and the sixth are agoing to be mounted and sent to Florida. I hope so for it will be fun, but you cant tell anything about it. We are agoing to have the Spencer carbine seven shooters. The Quartermaster has got them now...Have you received any papers entitled the Connecticut War Record? I subscribed for one and had it sent home...". Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. Hewitt served throughout the war fighting at the battles of Fort Wagner, Olustee, Florida, Bermuda Hundred before he was discharged in late 1864. |
