Autograph Letter Signed, Miss E.J Whittle, 1p. oblong octavo, Pittsylvania, November 30, 1864, with integral address leaf with Davis 10c stamp, with good slave content it reads If you can hire Betty to serve Mr. Gibson, Dr. Couch, Mr N. French, Capt. D. Dodson or Capt. Shant, she will not be sold, as she is so much attached to me & I to her - Either of these gentlemn may have her for nothing - she is never sick, and her child gives her no trouble - she can do the work of two women - cooks, sews, knits - cleans up a house, washes, works in a garden & can milk - nothing seduces me to part with her, but her husband - herself and child are well clothed and have shoes, and blankets for this winter. She saw 70 women, with their children, run off with the Yankees at Charlotte, Va. last summer when the enemy were there, and she has since been more humble and fond of us than ever. I trust you will get her a home somewhere. I ask no hire and she can go down the county at any time. Maybe Dick can come after her... VG. |
