Union soldier's letter, written in ink by Pvt. Charles L. Hewitt, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., Hilton Head, Aug. 1, 1862, reading, in part: "...not much prospect of going to Richmond yet...I have worked for Uncle Sam 1 year, 2 years more and then goodbye to him...the negro regiment is quartered about a mile back of us but I haven't seen it yet but I have seen some of the soldiers, they don't look very bad...". Hewitt served throughout the war fighting at the battles of Fort Wagner, Olustee, Florida, Bermuda Hundred before he was discharged in late 1864. |
