Scope & Content |
One letter (November 9, 1864; 4 pages) contains a vivid destruction caused by Sheridan's campaign through Virginia. According to Calvert, the Order summoning all detailed men to report at Camp Lee provided him with an opportunity to hear from "all parts of the country and especially from the Valley." He described Sheridan's "vandal horde" destroying mills, barns, stables, wheat, corn, hay, straw, cattle, hogs, sheep, poultry, bacon, flour, dwelling houses, farming implements, household and kitchen furniture. He also documented the prices of commodities which reveals, among other items, sweet potatoes at $40 and butter at $12. Despite these hardships, Calvert feels that "Grant is defunct" and that the Confederate Army is being reorganized for greater efficiency. |
