Scope & Content |
Member of the 118th Penn. Volunteers, known as the "Corn Exchange Regiment" because of a bounty of $10 for each man as well as the funds necessary for raising the regiment were furnished by the Philadelphia Corn Exchange. McDonald served in the Ambulance Train where he witnessed the horrendous results of every bloody battle fought by the Army of the Potomac from August 1862 through the end of the war. He was also in a unique position to record the war, hearing of movements and battles fought by other Corps, from the soldiers themselves. Collections consists of two diaries coving the period of Sept. 1, 1863 through June 6, 1865. Battles described include: Rappahanock Station, Mine Run, Beverly Ford, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Peeble's Farm, Dabney's Mills, and Five Forks through the pursuit and surrender of General Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia. Many skirmishes (a number of which are not listed in the OR) are listed, along with the late war sighting of Abraham Lincoln, who toured the front at City Point, Virginia in late March 1865 - just two weeks prior to his assassination. |
