May wrote on March 23, 1862, the day of the first battle of Kernstown. May wrote to his brother of a "glorious" victory and the gallantry of the 13th Indiana Infantry. "The battle is over, and though terribly cut up we are victorious and gloriously so, at dusk the tide of the contest was turned completely in our favor; I honestly believe it was the hardest contested field yet fought, twice the opportune arrival of our glorious 13th turned the tide against the Rebels...nobly did they battle with the boasted warriors of the South who claim never before to have fallen back before an enemy, but now they could not withstand the furious charge but quailed before it and soon began a precipitate fight." In his letter, May also referred to the Emancipation Proclamation, his confidence in President Lincoln, and the uppity attitude of General George B. McClellan. |
