Halsey Bartlett wrote to his sister on December 21, 1861 while on guard duty at Hilton Head, South Carolina about the burning of Charleston. "The Baltic came in yesterday and brought the news that when off Charleston bay the the city was in flames and since that another Steamer came in and news came that Charleston was in Ashes and they consultation among themselves whether it was best to destroy it or not They left it to the Mayor of the city and The burned city (ordered it burned) So the Great City of the South is in ruins There was 7 or 8 thousand people left without homes they dont know what to do with themselves..." Bartlett also related his attendance at a slave prayer meeting at Blufton Plantation, "and then one old Darkie which officiated as Minister kneeled down and Prayed and such a prayer as good a prayer as I ever heard in my life he prayed de good Lord dar he would carry on the good work he had commenced and hab mercy on de people dat were here and carry them safely through in their good work of mercy to us and that they at last might be free…" |
