This signed letter, dated April 6th, [1863] written in phonetic English briefly describes Jacob's experiences during a night during the siege at Vicksburg, specifically a river engagement with Union gunboats. The rebels seized at least one boat - Wells states that 21 prisoners were taken. He tells of firing on Yankee gunboats before seeing the opponent "rase the whight flag." Before closing, he sends "my lav to all Far well fur the present" and predicts that "we will hav a big fight her" |
