Scope & Content |
This Union soldier's signed letter, dated July 4, 1862 and written to his parents, contains description of the Battle of Mechanicsville (during the Seven Days Campaign). He describes his experiences as "four of the deadliest fights ever on record." Poignantly, he also laments the loss of his knapsack (with his treasured letters from home) - "With my knapsack went all my dear old letters from the dear ones at home which I was accustomed to read over most every day." "Through the mercy of God, I have passed through the fire & have come out unscathed." Writing from the James River on Independence Day 1862, M. Warrenton describes in great detail his unit's approach to Mechanicsville, Stonewall Jackson's impending attack, continuing engagements with rebel troops, and finally the loss of his Colonel in the initial action. Warrenton concedes that his narrative is disjointed and confusing. "In my next letter I will try & give you a more connected account of our battles, but we haven't got settled yet and I am obliged to write in a great hurry." |
