General George B. McClellan wrote to a bishop, Rev. C.P. McGerase, on July 12, 1862, eleven days after the end of the Seven Days battles. McClellan comments of the bravery and nobility of his army during the previous days' fighting and asks for the bishop's prayers for himself and his men. "Never was higher courage & [grater] patience shown- They deserve will of their country, & their countrymen should indeed be proud of them. I do indeed [?] your prayers- I know that the almighty will not disregard the prayers of the good. You are not mistaken in supposing that, amid the terrible scenes through which I hav passed, I hav fought for strength… the Almighty alone- also has deigned to make me the poor weak instrument in carrying out his great purposes." McClellan also mentions the situation regarding the capture of Brig. General George A. McCall, commanding officer of third division of the V Corps (commanding by Brig. Gen. Fitz John Porter). McCall was captured during Frayser's Farm on June 30th when his division was surrounded at Willis Church. "I am glad to be able to assure you that Genl McCall is safe- a prisoner it is true- but either not at all or very slightly wounded. I hope to effect a general exchange in a few days." |
