Hyde (William L.) |
Scope & Content |
William L. Hyde wrote these two letters, dated August 1, 1864 (6 pages) and October 1, 1864 (6 pages) to his wife in Chautaugua County, New York. On August 1, 1864, Hyde wrote from Bermuda Hundred, shortly after the battle of the Crater at Petersburg, Virginia, and his regiment's hot, difficult march to Bermuda Hundred. He described the explosion of the forts and the Union's immediate success, as well as the ensuing panic and eventual retreat of the Union forces. He then goes on to describe the march to Bermuda Hundred, which was the "hottest day of the season" and his efforts to treat "sun struck" men with Jamaica Ginger and sprits. His regiment thought they were marching all the way to Washington, D.C., but Hyde was relived when they stopped at Bermuda Hundred were able to move the stricken men to a hospital. He also comments on the recruitment of black soldiers and regiments, which he sees as a mistake. On October 1, 1864 Hyde wrote from near Jones Landing after a battle somewhere in Petersburg vicinity. He recorded that his regiment acted honorably in the battle, but there are many wounded. Hyde helped treat the wounded in the absence of the physician and he also aided the physicians with amputations. Since he was in a local volunteer regiment, he knew many of the men who lost limbs that day and reported their names to his wife. Although the wounded were many, he did not believe that there were as many severe cases as many severe cases as at Cold Harbor. He also mentioned that his horse is ill and he doesn't think he will recover. Hyde believed that Lee's Army was on the run and could not hold out much longer. |
