Dated July 1, 1863 and written on lined U. S. Army stationery imprinted with the heading, "Headquarters Twelfth Corps D'Armee, Army of the Potomac," General Slocum wrote this short note to General George Meade on the eve of the action at Gettysburg. It informs Meade that General Sickles has arrived with most of his men. "There has nothing occurred since my last note to you - unless I receive orders from you before midnight I shall assume that the other Corps are coming up and that the battle is to be fought here tomorrow." |
