Scope & Content |
In this signed letter, dated May 12, 1862 and addressed to "Dear Brother," Frank Bailey speaks of the river crowded with "steamships and other craft" in the Richmond area. The remainder of the letter makes clear his antipathy toward the black soldiers he encounters. this letter clearly reflects this 24 year old New Yorker's attitudes concerning the limitations of the black population and specifically black soldiers. He prefaces his writings with "I am going to tell of some of the reports that are in circulation here but I will not vouch for their truthfulness for I have not seen any thing of the kind at the battle of West Point." However, his values are clear as he writes, "I hear that the rebels sent out a regt of niggers to fight our men and they were as naked as when they were born. . . it is said that they cut the throats of our wounded and then rob them of every article of any value." And later, "I don't believe in taking them prisoners but kill them where ever they find them that they may never more curse the land with their hateful presence." |
