Scope & Content |
General Winfield Scott Hancock writes on June 24, 1864 from the headquarters of the II Corps to Major Daniel Butterfield about the fighting sustained by his men in the past fifty-one days (May 5-June 24, 1864). Battles included: Wilderness (May 5-7), Spotsylvania (May 8-21) where the II Corps distinguished themselves at the Bloody Angle (May 12), North Anna (May 23), Cold Harbor (June 3), assault on Petersburg (June 15-18), and Jerusalem Plank Road or Weldon Railroad (June 21-24). Hancock had given his command to General David Birney because he was suffering from his wound. "Since the 18th I have not been on duty- having found it necessary to rest for a few days on account of my Gettysburg wound. A piece of bone having come out since I shall I think have no more trouble. I expect to take command again in a day or So… Day before yesterday Benton's and Gibbons Divisions were attacked in rear in the woods while they were advancing to charge their positions and did not come out with much honor. They lost 4 guns and about (I fear) 2000 prisoners- besides a few colors. I regret I have not the time to answer you letter more fully. I have 12 Brigades and have had twenty Brigade commanders killed and wounded. The losses in the 2nd Corps in the fifty one days of constant fighting has been Killed 3600 Wounded 12,000 missing 5000." . |
