Scope & Content |
Eccles writes to a friend about the battle at Fort Donelson. He relates his experience as acting lieutenant and the ensuing battle. "The first day I was perfectly cool not withstanding the bullets whiseled around me in all directions one of our men fel dead from a shot through the head…The fight comenced the morning of the 13th and lasted untill the morning of the 16th being three days & three nights the last night we had a hard time standing in the ditch behind the breast work but we stood untill morning when The rebels sounded their bugle & we all expected them to open fire on us imeadiately but instead of that they run up the white flag & I never saw more glad hearts in my life…" |
