In this signed letter, dated April 20, 1861, Thos. [Thomas] Revenson writes from New Orleans to his Texas friend, F. H. Miner, about the events surrounding the onset of the war. He reports the erroneous rumor of General Winfield Scott's resignation from the U. S. Army, the desertion of Harper's Ferry by Union troops, and the capture of the "Key of the West." He reports fighting in Baltimore, writing, "The street railroads are all being torn up, in Baltimore, and trains are being stoned and stopped on there way to "Washington" War has begun and there is no help for it." |
