Scope & Content |
Francis H. Lincoln of the 118th Pennsylvania Volunteers, also known as the "Corn Regiment," wrote this letter on December 17, 1863. Describing the Mine Run Campaign, Lincoln reports crossing the Rapidan River on November 26 and marching to the vicinity of Fredericksburg. On the 27th he described marching through brush so thick it was "almost impassable and being shelled while on picket duty. The following day he wrote of being close to the enemy but rather than engaging they "stood watching each other like cat and dog." On November 29 they encountered entrenched Confederates on the other side of a creek protected by "forty odd guns visible ...." and "takes drove in the opposite side sharply pointed." |
