Scope & Content |
Unknown Union soldier known only as Charlie wrote this letter on February 8, 1865 to his parents. Charlie was in an artillery battery close to Bermuda Hundred on the James River outside of Richmond. In late January, 1865, several Confederate boats tried to run the batteries on the James Rives to cut off supplies and reinforcements of Grants Army. According to Charlie, one of the "Rebel Rams" ran aground and he was sent with a 30 pount parrot to destroy it. In great detail he describes firing 62 shots that day and being certain that many of his shots found their target. |
